Alcoholics Annonymous

Monday morning, we’re all likely to recognize that drinking alcohol isn’t the most productive way to spend time, but by Friday- we’re all just about ready for some moonshine! But despite the empty wallet factor… what are the actual cons to drinking alcohol? Is it as bad as we think it is?

Fit Sugar sent out to answer this question, and answered it for us by hitting on three key points:


Allergies. Alright… as a photographer I’m going to have to really emphasize this one…  no one wants to have a red, puffy, tissue rubbed face. Never mind in photo-shoots. Although alcohol doesn’t cause allergies, it can worsen it’s symptoms for some sufferers due to histamine that is produced during the fermentation process.

My suggestion: Although obvious, I’m still going to throw it out there. If you fit in this category, don’t drink several nights  before important events. Even if your allergies tend to clear up after one day, it’s not worth the possibility of subjecting yourself to torturous allergies. This includes photo-shoots! Even though I will make sure that you still feel and look absolutely stunning, why risk putting any sort of damper on your experience? Keep it clean a few nights before, and then after your self-love shoot, you can celebrate like a princess!


Skin problems.This one actually makes a lot of sense and can be put very simply. Your body needs water to stay fresh, hydrated, and to continue collagen production. Yes, that wonderful collagen that we produce to keep ourselves youthful. Chronic dehydration causes you to not regenerate collagen as well, and drinking causes dehydration. I think you get the point.

My suggestion: Drink. Lots. Of. Water. It sounds like a complete no brainer, right? {I can’t be the only one who watches Dr. Oz!} But so many people are depriving their bodies of valuable water on a daily basis! Each day, you should aim to drink your body weight in ounces. So if you weight 130 lbs., then you should be drinking 130 oz of water every day. If you are drinking alcohol- pace yourself. For every alcoholic beverage, drink a glass of water in between. Not only will it prevent you from a nasty hangover the next day, but it will keep your skin looking so fresh and vibrant that even Photoshop will be jealous.


Weight Gain. {Of course I saved the best for last}. Hopefully everyone is aware of the nutritional facts that are secretly not posted on many individual bottles, but alcohol does contain calories! And lots of them! The worst part of these calories is that the calories are empty- meaning they serve your body no nutrition. Many drinks aim to be low calorie, and do a good job at it in comparison to heavier beers, but take a Bud Light for example. 115 calories. Drink four of them, and you’ve consumed a quarter of you daily calorie intake without providing your body any nourishment. Some beers are not quite so friendly, and are usually the tastiest. Take my new favorite: Wells Banana Bread Beer. 199 calories. I was completely unaware of how high in calories this beer was for the longest time! Pretty sure I drank half my daily calorie intake once or twice… we’ve all been there.

My suggestion: This one is hard for me. I believe in rewarding yourself, and enjoying things that you love. I really love and enjoy Wells beer, and I think it’s great to sit down and have one. The key here, is to enjoy only one.  Then, switch from your high calorie drinks, to low calorie drinks after one or two. Yes. calories and losing weight is a simple math game, but being bad once in a while or having one or two beers never put the scale over the edge. It’s repeatedly making poor lifestyle choices that does.

I think overall, my opinion to Fit Sugar’s question, “Is alcohol really that bad for you?”  is no.I’m not a doctor, but I believe life is meant to be enjoyed, lived, and celebrated in moderation. But, the key word here is moderation. Balance out unhealthy choices with healthy ones, and you’ll find that you feel and look amazing.
